Factors affecting the readiness of commercial banks in implementing Basel III standards

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting the readiness of Vietnamese commercial banks to implement Basel III standards. Based on a review of theoretical frameworks and previous studies, the research model is constructed with three groups of factors: expected benefits from Basel III, awareness of Basel III, and available organizational resources. Data were collected from 211 middle- and senior-level managers working at Vietnamese commercial banks using a structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale. The study employs descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s Alpha reliability testing, and regression analysis to assess the impact of these factors on Basel III implementation readiness. The results indicate that Vietnamese commercial banks generally have a relatively positive awareness of Basel III and exhibit a moderate level of readiness for its implementation. Among the examined factors, awareness of Basel III has the strongest positive impact on implementation readiness, followed by expected benefits. In contrast, available resources do not show a statistically significant impact. The findings provide empirical evidence on the determinants of Basel III adoption in Vietnam and offer managerial implications to enhance implementation capacity within the banking system.
