Achievements of EVFTA implementation and practical lessons for international economic cooperation frameworks
Published: August 14, 2026
Abstract
This study examines the implementation of the EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to assess its achievements and identify lessons for international cooperation frameworks. Using a qualitative approach based on secondary data from international organizations, business associations, and academic studies, the findings show that the EVFTA has promoted bilateral trade, exports, market access, investment, and Vietnam’s participation in global value chains. Its implementation has also supported legal and institutional reforms, improved labor and environmental standards, and advanced sustainable development. These achievements are associated with the agreement’s extensive commitments and relatively effective implementation and compliance mechanisms. The study suggests that lessons from the EVFTA can inform the design and implementation of other international cooperation frameworks, provided that they are adapted to participating countries’ institutional conditions, development levels, and interests.
