The development trend of energy system simulation models to achieve the goal of net zero emissions

Abstract
Energy system simulation is a useful tool that can help policymakers to develop effective strategies to achieve the goal of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions to zero. However, the emergence and rapid changes of emission reduction and energy saving technologies are a huge challenge for building energy models. To achieve net zero emissions, energy system simulation models should be upgraded in terms of (1) Scope, (2) Function, and (3) Application. This paper presents the challenges that energy modelers face, thereby forming the development trend of energy system simulation models to achieve the goal of net zero emissions.
