The impact of free trade agreements on high-tech FDI attraction for sustainable development in Vietnam

Amid the trend of regional trade integration and shifts in global investment, new-generation free trade agreements (FTAs) present both opportunities and challenges for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) into Vietnam, particularly in the high-tech sector. This study analyzes the impact of FTAs on high-tech FDI inflows in Vietnam and evaluates the current status of high-tech FDI in terms of capital scale and investor origin. The results indicate that trade liberalization and improvements in economic institutions have enhanced transparency, expanded market access, and strengthened the investment environment, thereby facilitating high-tech FDI flows. However, the share of high-tech FDI within total FDI remains low, and investors are predominantly concentrated in Asia. Based on these findings, the study proposes policy recommendations to improve the attraction of high-tech FDI, leveraging FTA commitments to promote green and sustainable economic growth in Vietnam.
