Thach Tan sedge mat weaving village in the context of urbanization: Challenges and opportunities

This study analyzes the multidimensional impacts of urbanization on the sustainable development of Thach Tan sedge mat weaving village (Tam Thang commune, Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province), a long-established craft village and valuable repository of intangible cultural heritage. The study highlights that urbanization exerts both challenges and opportunities for the village. Challenges include shifts in labor structure, lifestyle changes, competition from low-cost industrial products, land pressures, and erosion of cultural values. Conversely, urbanization creates opportunities for cultural tourism development, green product promotion, market expansion, and infrastructure enhancement. Based on these findings, the study proposes strategic directions to preserve and sustainably develop Thach Tan village, offering insights for designing development models for traditional craft villages in the context of rapid urbanization and industrialization.
