Comparing the Vietnamese stock market with the Hong Kong stock market and solutions to upgrade the Vietnamese stock market

Abstract
The Vietnamese stock market experienced significant growth in 2022, with a large number of new accounts. It created momentum for the market’s growth but also caused volatility as inexperienced individual investors accounted for a predominant proportion of new investors. The Vietnamese stock market is classified as a frontier market with a high tendency towards speculation and several remaining inefficiencies. This paper highlighted the development of the stock markets in Vietnam and Hong Kong (China) from 2015 to 2023 and pointed out the limitations of the Vietnamese stock market compared to the Hong Kong stock market. Based on the paper’s findings, some solutions were proposed to enhance the market’s efficiency and facilitate the upgrade of the Vietnamese stock market from a frontier market to an emerging market.
