Bancassurance digitalization: international trends and opportunities for Vietnam

Abstract

The rapid evolution of digital technologies has accelerated the transformation of the financial and banking sector, enabling commercial banks to innovate service offerings, broaden their customer base at minimal cost, and elevate the user experience. By integrating advanced solutions and automation, banks have shifted from traditional distribution channels to digital platforms, enhancing multi-channel communication and tailoring insurance products to individual customer needs. Bancassurance, in which banks and insurers collaborate to distribute insurance, has been particularly affected by this shift: all parties increasingly adopt digital tools to streamline operations and engage clients. Yet in Vietnam, the practical deployment of digital bancassurance raises critical questions: To what extent have these innovations been implemented in real-world settings? Do they achieve the desired levels of convenience, synchronization, and customer appeal? Drawing on a comparative analysis of digitalization trends in regional and global markets, this study examines Vietnam’s digital bancassurance landscape to identify its strengths, weaknesses, and policy gaps. Based on our findings, we propose a series of targeted recommendations, ranging from technological enhancements to regulatory adjustments, to foster the sustainable growth of digital bancassurance within Vietnam’s financial ecosystem.
