Vietnam’s night-time economy in comparison with selected Southeast Asian countries: Current landscape, development potential, and policy lessons

Abstract
The night-time economy (from 18:00 to 06:00) is emerging as a key driver of economic growth and tourism development in Southeast Asia. Vietnam, with its youthful population and rich cultural diversity, possesses significant potential in this sector. However, challenges in planning, investment, and governance continue to hinder its full development. This study employs secondary data analysis and qualitative comparative methods to evaluate Vietnam’s night-time economy in relation to three regional counterparts: Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. Based on these comparisons, the study suggests that Vietnam could adopt Thailand’s adaptive policy frameworks, integrate Singapore’s technological innovations, and leverage cultural elements similar to Malaysia to promote a vibrant and sustainable night-time economy.
