Breeding and market Consumption of crossbred cattle in Phu Thien district, Gia Lai province

This study analyzes the scale of cattle farming, herd structure, husbandry practices, productivity, marketing conditions, and challenges faced by crossbred cattle farmers in Phu Thien District, Gia Lai Province. Data were collected through a survey of 100 local cattle farming households. The findings reveal that small-scale production remains dominant, with 96% of households raising fewer than 10 head of cattle. In 2024, the average herd size per household was 3.5 head. Sind crossbred cattle accounted for approximately 65% of the total herd. The average calving interval was 395 days, and the average live weight of beef cattle at the time of sale was 352 kg, with an average age of 19.2 months. Beef cattle and calves were primarily marketed within the province, mainly through local traders and slaughterhouses. The study also identifies key constraints that hinder productivity and market expansion, providing a basis for future policy recommendations and support strategies to improve the sustainability of cattle farming in the region.
