The impact of institutional quality on economic growth in ASEAN countries
Published: July 25, 2026
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of institutional quality on economic growth in eight ASEAN countries - Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, and Malaysia - over the period 2000 to 2023. Utilizing panel data analysis, the research highlights that domestic investment is a primary driver of economic growth across the region. While institutional quality shows a positive relationship with economic growth, the effect is not statistically significant at high confidence levels. Nevertheless, the findings underscore the important role of institutional frameworks in facilitating economic activities and fostering a stable environment for long-term development. The study provides insights for policymakers aiming to enhance institutional effectiveness as a means to sustain and accelerate regional economic growth.
