Impacts of information technology application on the operational efficiency of Vietnamese commercial banks

Abstract
This study explored the impact of information technology application on the operational efficiency of Vietnamese commercial banks. The study used an observation sample of 25 Vietnamese commercial banks over the period from the first quarter of 2013 to the first quarter of 2023 and the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method. To measure the performance of Vietnamese commercial banks, the return on assets (ROA) and the return on equity (ROE) were used. The study found that, in the short term, the number of payment transactions that were made through debit, credit, or prepaid cards positively impacted ROA, and the number of transactions that were made via machines such as POS, EDC, and EFTPOS had a positive impact on ROA and ROE. In addition, the number of ATMs also has a positive impact on ROE. However, the value of transactions performed via POS, EDC, or EFTPOS machines negatively impacts ROA.
