Ways to improve the learners’ autonomy and their implementation in English language teaching for first-year high-quality students at the National Economics University

Abstract

Autonomy which is an essential skill during learning process helps students acquire the knowledge more easily, which in turn triggers the learning effectiveness. Autonomy in English learning plays a much more crucial role, especially in tertiary credit-based education. This is a new way of teaching and learning, advocating for the initiative and independence of learners. In this process, besides being aware of the motivation for autonomy, the teaching method of lecturers is very important. Therefore, this paper presents: 1) The concept of autonomy; 2) A survey on students’ attitudes of autonomy in learning; 3) Factors that affect the learner’s autonomy; 4) Ways to help learners improve their autonomy through teaching activities; and 5) The implementation of autonomy to teach English for students.
