Current status of greenhouse gas emissions in Vietnam’s beer industry and emission reduction potential
Published: September 7, 2026
Abstract
This study assesses the greenhouse gas emission profile and reduction potential of 29 breweries in Vietnam based on IPCC guidelines, the GHG Protocol, and national regulations. Average emission intensity was 67.3 gCO₂e/L, close to the global benchmark. At biomass-fueled breweries, grid electricity accounted for 93% of emissions, while purchased steam contributed 3%. Emission intensity was generally lower at breweries producing more than 100 million liters annually, although the relationship between production scale and emission intensity was not fully linear. Quartile analysis identified average intensities of 39.0, 59.3, 73.3, and 94.5 gCO₂e/L for very good, good, average, and poor performers, respectively. Average and poor performers could reduce emissions by 19.1% and 22.4%, while energy optimization combined with rooftop solar could achieve reductions of up to 27.1%.
