Calculation of CO₂-equivalent emissions during the construction of the Red River and Ma River dike system upgrading project

Abstract

This study estimates greenhouse gas emissions during the construction phase of the project to rehabilitate and upgrade the Red River and Ma River dike systems based on data on diesel fuel consumption, electricity use, and construction materials. Emissions are calculated using activity data and the corresponding emission factors for each source. The results show that approximately 21.51 million liters of diesel are expected to be consumed by construction machinery and vehicles, generating about 57,755 tCO₂e. Electricity consumption is estimated at approximately 274,880 MWh, corresponding to around 185,984 tCO₂e. Embodied carbon emissions from asphalt, concrete, steel, and concrete piles are estimated at approximately 151,825 tCO₂e. Total emissions from the sources included in the study amount to approximately 395,563 tCO₂e. These findings provide a quantitative basis for identifying major emission sources and proposing measures to improve the efficiency of fuel, energy, and material use during construction.
