Developing local specialty value chains for sustainable livelihoods and tourism in the Con Co Special Economic Zone

Abstract

Con Co Island possesses a variety of indigenous specialties with significant potential for sustainable livelihoods and marine tourism development. However, the exploitation, processing, and commercialization of these products remain small-scale and lack effective value chain linkages. This study employed a case study approach combined with field observation, in-depth interviews, and SWOT analysis to assess the potential and current status of local specialty development. The results indicate that indigenous specialty products have considerable potential for supporting green economic growth and experiential tourism, but still face limitations related to processing technology, branding, and market connectivity. Based on these findings, the study proposes solutions for developing specialty product value chains associated with sustainable tourism in Con Co Special Zone.
