Current use of ChatGPT in English speaking practice among first-year students at National Economics University

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence is significantly changing foreign-language teaching and learning, particularly English speaking practice. This study evaluates the use of ChatGPT among first-year students in the Advanced Educational Program at National Economics University. The findings show that ChatGPT has become a frequently used learning-support tool. Most students use it to practice conversations, expand their vocabulary, improve fluency and expression, and prepare for English speaking examinations. Students report that ChatGPT helps strengthen communication confidence, learning motivation, and learner autonomy. However, its support for pronunciation remains limited, response quality depends substantially on prompt design, and many students lack sufficient knowledge to use its features effectively. The findings highlight the need for guidance on prompt construction and the appropriate use of ChatGPT in speaking practice.
