Innovative work behavior: Toward a more precise conceptual definition
Published: August 14, 2026
Abstract
This study develops a more precise definition of innovative work behavior at the individual employee level by applying the concept-development framework proposed by Podsakoff et al. A qualitative content analysis of definitions published in previous studies was conducted to identify, classify, and evaluate the attributes of the concept. The findings identify four core attributes: novelty, usefulness, proactivity, and application. Based on these attributes, the study defines innovative work behavior as employees’ proactive behavior in applying new ideas to work practices for the benefit of themselves, others, or their organization. The proposed definition clarifies the conceptual domain and boundaries of innovative work behavior, distinguishes it from related concepts, and provides a theoretical foundation for developing measurement scales and conducting consistent future research.
