Macroeconomic factors affecting the popularity of Chinese in Southeast Asia: The role of technology and artificial intelligence
Published: August 14, 2026
Abstract
This study examines the effects of socioeconomic conditions, digitalization, and artificial intelligence on the popularity of Chinese in six Southeast Asian countries during 2005 - 2023. Chinese-language interest is measured using Google Trends, while panel regression models are applied to 114 observations. The findings indicate that AI development negatively affects interest in learning Chinese, whereas Internet penetration has a positive effect. GDP per capita is also negatively associated with Chinese-language learning, suggesting that economic development does not necessarily increase demand for the language. Population, foreign direct investment, and trade with China have no statistically significant effects. The results highlight the complex role of digital technology and AI in shaping foreign-language learning trends across Southeast Asia.
