Digital transformation at PVEP: Application of the OSDU platform and artificial intelligence to improve operational efficiency and petroleum knowledge management

Abstract

Digital transformation has become essential for sustainable development in the Industry 4.0 era. This paper examines PVEP’s shift from fragmented data storage to a centralized ecosystem compliant with the OSDU standard. The proposed solution integrates technical data standardization, access control, natural-language knowledge retrieval, and collaboration on a shared platform. Building on this foundation, PVEP developed PVEP InsightX, combining an on-premises OSDU platform with agentic AI, a bilingual virtual technical assistant, and specialized machine-learning applications such as the Missing Pay solution for identifying overlooked productive zones. Initial results suggest that PVEP InsightX can reduce information-processing time, improve transparency, support operational optimization, enhance production and recovery performance, strengthen internal data security, and advance PVEP’s technological autonomy in petroleum exploration and production.Facing the challenges of natural production decline in mature fields, Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP) has initiated a paradigm shift in its management mindset: moving from fragmented operations to a Data-Driven governance model. One core success story of this transformation is the PVEP InsightX ecosystem, which establishes a "Single Source of Truth" via a centralized, OSDU-compliant on-premise data platform. Powered by an advanced Agentic AI architecture, the system ensures transparency through verifiable citations and acts as a springboard for sophisticated Machine Learning models. Notably, the AI Missing Pay solution for Clastic reservoirs automates the complex 5-step log evaluation workflow (VSHALE, PHIE, SW, RESF, PAYF), correlating static and dynamic data to uncover overlooked pay zones. By generating actionable Rankings and predicting Incremental Oil Gains, PVEP InsightX empowers executives to make swift, highly reliable decisions for well interventions and IOR campaigns, potentially supporting the transformation of raw data into actionable insights and reinforcing PVEP’s commitment to digital transformation in the Industry 4.0 era.
