Evaluation of the antifungal activity of leaf and stem bark extracts from Barringtonia acutangula (L.) Gaertn. against Candida albicans M1175 (Barringtonia acutangula (L.) Gaertn)

This study evaluates the antifungal activity of leaf and stem bark extracts of Barringtonia acutangula against Candida albicans M1175. Phytochemical analysis revealed notable flavonoid contents in both extracts, with concentrations of 3.740 ± 0.013 mg QE/g in the leaf extract and 1.020 ± 0.941 mg QE/g in the stem bark extract. Antifungal activity was assessed using the agar well diffusion method, demonstrating that both ethanol extracts exhibited inhibitory effects against C. albicans M1175. The leaf ethanol extract showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of 1.570 mg/mL and 25.030 mg/mL, respectively, whereas the stem bark ethanol extract exhibited MIC and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), determined by the dilution method, of 1.050 mg/mL and 8.370 mg/mL, respectively. These findings indicate that both leaf and stem bark extracts of B. acutangula possess significant antifungal potential, underscoring their promise as sources of bioactive compounds.
