Urbanization in Vietnam: Current trends, challenges, and pathways to sustainable development
Published: August 3, 2026
Abstract
This study provides a systematic examination of Vietnam’s urbanization process over the 2010-2024 period, highlighting the transition from extensive, scale-driven growth to a model that increasingly strains technical and social infrastructure. With the urbanization rate reaching 44.3% in 2024, the analysis explores the paradox between urban areas’ substantial economic contribution, accounting for approximately 70% of GDP, and the mounting challenges related to quality of life, rising logistics costs, and the disruption of traditional labor and settlement structures. By assessing the impacts of industrial relocation and spatial economic transformation, the study offers an integrated perspective on the evolving dynamics of urban development and their implications for sustainable and inclusive growth.
