The technical development in coffee production of households: case study of Dak Lak province

Abstract

This study analyzes the technical efficiency, the change in the technical efficiency, and the technological progress in coffee production of households in Dak Lak province by using a panel data of Thailand - Vietnam Socio Economic Panel (TVSEP) in the period of 2016 - 2017. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is used to calculate factors affecting the change in the Malmquist Total factor productivity (TFPCH). The technical efficiency of groups of households is calculated by using the constant return to scale model (CCR) and the variable return to scale model (BCC). The study finds out the technical efficiency of different groups of households is different. It means that there are differences in terms of coffee farming pattern between large-scale farming households and small- and medium-scale farming households. Especially, the study finds out there is an increase in the total factor productivity and there is also a certain degree of progress in coffee farming techniques of farming households.
