This study is to optimize the extraction conditions of P. barbatum for α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. Four factors were examined in this study, including the ethanol concentration (30, 50, 70, and 100%), the extraction temperature (40, 50, 60, and 70°C), the extraction time (30, 45, 60, and 90 minutes) and the solid to solvent ratio (1:5, 1:10, 1:15, and 1:20 g/mL). The study’s results show that the appropriate extraction conditions for α-glucosidase inhibitory activities were the ethanol concentration of 70%, the extraction temperature of 60°C, extraction temperature of 60 minutes, and the solid to solvent ratio of 1:10 g/mL. The extract from P. barbatum under these conditions has good α-glucosidase inhibitiors with IC50 of 6.87 µg/mL, and anti-inflammatory activities with IC20 of 4.75 µg/mL. The extract has the potential for diabetes treatment.
