Making, Analyzing, and Designing Innovation Ecosystems Using the Ecosystem Pie Model (EPM)

Abstract

It is necessary for businesses to innovate in order to survive and develop in a volatile environment. However, it is difficult for businesses to innovate independently, and they often rely on other actors within the innovation ecosystem to achieve breakthroughs. This poses many new challenges for managers. Currently, there is still no comprehensive approach to support managers in the analysis and decision-making process in the economic field, particularly in energy research. This paper presents a strategic tool for mapping, analyzing, and designing (modeling) the components of an innovation ecosystem. The tool simultaneously analyzes the ecosystem's structure and relationships to understand how different actors interact to create value, then integrates these elements into a visual strategic framework called the Ecosystem Pie Model (EPM).
