A study on characterization of red mud as an active mineral additive for building material production

Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the material and environmental characteristics of red mud to evaluate its suitability as an active mineral additive in the production of building materials, with a particular focus on Portland cement systems. Red mud samples were characterized in terms of chemical composition using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), mineralogical composition using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and key physical properties. The results indicate that red mud contains substantial quantities of reactive oxides, notably Fe₂O₃, Al₂O₃, and SiO₂, which are capable of participating in pozzolanic reactions when appropriately activated. Experimental investigations incorporating red mud as an active additive further demonstrate its functional performance in building material applications. Overall, the findings confirm the viability of red mud as a promising alternative resource, supporting the development of sustainable construction materials and advancing circular economy practices
