Electrodeposition of Ni - Cu alloy in a sulfate–citrate medium and its application in non-enzymatic glucose oxidation

Abstract

In this study, a Ni - Cu alloy was fabricated by electrodeposition in a sulfate–citrate medium to develop a highly active electrode material for non-enzymatic glucose oxidation. The effects of electrodeposition conditions on the surface morphology, alloy composition, and electrochemical properties of the electrode were investigated using material characterization methods and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that the sulfate–citrate medium facilitated the formation of a uniform, well-adhered Ni–Cu coating with a large electrochemically active surface area. The alloy electrode exhibited high catalytic activity toward glucose oxidation in an alkaline medium due to the synergistic effect of the Ni(II)/Ni(III) redox couple and the enhanced charge-transfer capability provided by Cu. These findings demonstrate the potential of Ni–Cu electrodes for the development of non-enzymatic glucose sensors with high sensitivity and stability.
