CuI/Cu²⁺-TiO₂ photocatalytic nanocomposites for antifungal applications against Magnaporthe oryzae - the causal agent of rice blast disease

Abstract
Building on previous synthesis and characterization of CuI/Cu²⁺-TiO₂ nanocomposites, this study examines the relationship between band-gap energy (Eg), photocatalytic activity, and antifungal performance. Eg values were determined using the Tauc method. Increasing Cu content from 2.73% to 9.53% reduced Eg from 2.90 to 2.60 eV and shifted the absorption edge from 428 to 477 nm. Under LED irradiation, sample 3CuT3 showed the highest antifungal activity against Magnaporthe oryzae, achieving 91.55% inhibition at 500 ppm after 10 days, compared with 78.22% for 1CuT1 and 83.55% for 2CuT2. The Cu⁺/Cu²⁺ redox couple enhances visible-light absorption, electron-hole separation, and reactive oxygen species generation. The findings demonstrate the potential of CuI/Cu²⁺–TiO₂ for sustainable rice blast control.
