Smelting ferrotitanium by an out-of-furnace aluminothermic process

Abstract

FeTi alloys were produced from ilmenite concentrate and titanium slag using an out-of-furnace aluminothermic process. Charge compositions were calculated and subsequently adjusted based on experimental results to obtain an alloy corresponding to the FeTi35C8 ferrotitanium grade. Replacing ilmenite concentrate with titanium slag increased the Ti content of the FeTi alloy. The thermite mixture increased the reaction temperature and reduced slag viscosity, facilitating alloy - slag separation and improving Ti recovery. FeTi produced from titanium slag contained 39.9 -42.8% Ti, although its Al content of 18.2 - 25.5% exceeded the permissible limit for FeTi35C8. Nevertheless, the resulting FeTi alloy may be used as a complex ferroalloy for alloying and deoxidation, thereby reducing aluminum consumption during steelmaking.
