Chemical composition and antioxidant activity of Siam weed essential oil (Chromolaena odorata L.), family Asteraceae

Abstract

This study analyzes the chemical composition and DPPH radical-scavenging activity of leaf and flower essential oils from Chromolaena odorata L. Hydrodistillation yielded 0.30% and 0.34% (w/w) essential oil from the leaves and flowers, respectively. GC–MS analysis identified 63 compounds in the leaf oil and 98 compounds in the flower oil, accounting for 97.22% and 97.64% of their total compositions. The principal constituents included germacrene D, geijerene, trans-caryophyllene, dictamnol, α-pinene, and δ-cadinene. The flower essential oil exhibited substantially stronger antioxidant activity than the leaf oil, with SC₅₀ values of 3.443 ± 0.040 mg/mL and 13.190 ± 0.353 mg/mL, respectively. The flower oil therefore demonstrated approximately 3.8 times greater DPPH radical-scavenging capacity than the leaf oil.
