Current status of testing methods for liquid milk products in Vietnam in the process of harmonization with international standards

Abstract

Liquid milk is nutritionally valuable but has low physicochemical stability and is highly susceptible to spoilage. Analytical methods are therefore essential for controlling product quality and food safety, while harmonized testing capacity facilitates fair trade and reduces technical barriers. This study reviews Vietnam’s current legal documents and standards governing testing methods for liquid milk products and compares them with methods issued by international organizations, including ISO, IDF, AOAC, and European standardization bodies. The analysis indicates that Vietnam has increasingly adopted international reference methods through national standards and technical regulations. Nevertheless, gaps remain in detection limits, analytical sensitivity, laboratory capacity, and the timely adoption of updated technical versions. The study proposes technical solutions to strengthen domestic testing capabilities and further harmonize Vietnam’s testing system with international standards.
