Green conversion of cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon essential oil into benzaldehyde using 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin as a catalyst
Published: August 11, 2026
Abstract
This study aims to develop a green process for converting trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA) derived from cinnamon essential oil into benzaldehyde (BA) using 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2-HP-β-CD) as a catalyst. The catalyst was synthesized from β-cyclodextrin and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. An oxidation reaction using H₂O₂ was conducted to convert CA into BA, while the effects of temperature, reaction time, H₂O₂-to-CA molar ratio, catalyst amount, and propylene glycol (PG) as a solvent were investigated to determine the optimal conditions. The results show that the appropriate conditions are 70°C, a reaction time of 90 minutes, an H₂O₂-to-CA molar ratio of 3:1, and a catalyst-to-CA mass ratio of 1.5:1 in the presence of PG. Under these conditions, CA conversion reached 62%, BA selectivity reached 54%, and BA yield reached 33%. The combination of 2-HP-β-CD and PG improved the solubility of CA, enhanced conversion efficiency, and demonstrated potential for the green synthesis of benzaldehyde from natural feedstocks.
