Application of deep eutectic solvents in the extraction of chitin from tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) shells

Abstract
This study investigates the extraction of chitin from tiger shrimp shells using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) system composed of choline chloride and lactic acid (1:2) as a sustainable alternative to conventional chemical methods. Through systematic experimental evaluation of the heat treatment process, the optimal conditions were identified as a material-to-solvent ratio of 1:20 (w/v), a temperature of 80°C, and a treatment duration of 03 hours. Under these conditions, the extracted chitin achieved a purity of 94.89%, with a residual protein content of 3.40% and a recovery efficiency of 20.10%. In comparison, the traditional chemical approach yielded a lower recovery efficiency of 15.74%. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the DES-based method not only enhances extraction efficiency but also underscores its potential as a green solvent, contributing to the valorization of seafood by-products and improved environmental sustainability
