Optimizing the distillation process of the essential oil extracted from Ly Son garlic with many cloves (Allium Sativum L.)

Abstract

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a familiar spice and it has also been used as a popular herb since ancient times. Garlic essential oil is considered a valuable remedy with many benefits. The distillation process of the essential oil extracted from Ly Son garlic achieves the highest efficiency of 3% with these following optimal distillation conditions: the distillation time of 150 minutes, 2% salt concentration, soaking time of 60 minutes, percentage water/material ratio of 7/1. The GC-MS methods results show that the Ly Son garlic essential oil has the highest content of diallyl disulfide and allyl methyl trisulfide compared to that of Ly Son lonely garlic essential oil and Phan Rang garlic essential oil. Ly Son garlic essential oil with many cloves also has a high antioxidant capacity with its DPPH free radical scavenging ability.
