Using activated carbon derived from coconut fiber to remove Chromium (VI)
Published: July 29, 2026
Abstract
Biochar is considered an economical adsorption medium because of its capacity to remove heavy metals and organic pollutants from polluted water. In this work, phosphoric acid (H3PO4) was used in a unique manner to promote the production of coconut fiber activated carbon (AC) from biochar carbon (BC) by pyrolysis. The resulting product was then tested for effective adsorption of Cr (VI) from aqueous environments. To evaluate the structure and content of BC and AC, advanced characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, and pHpzc were used. Compared to the BC's removal rate of 38.5%, the AC was able to remove 48.05% of Cr(VI). The following factors had a significant impact on the rate of Cr(VI) removal: temperature, kinetics, isotherm, adsorption time, pH, and adsorption capacity. The adsorption curve of AC matches well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
