76. A Study on the Use of Barringtonia acutangula Leaves’ Extract to Treat Diabetic White Mice

Abstract

Diabetes is a heterogeneous condition characterized by hyperglycaemia as a consequence of defects in insulin secretion, insulin resistance/action or combination of both of these factors. If glucose increases in the long-term, it causes carbohydrate, protide and lipide metabolism disorders, leading to many health problems. Hence, we need to take measures to prevent and treat diabetes, such as healthy diet, doing exercise and using medicine including herbs. Barringtonia acutangula can be used to treat diabetes. This study examines the use of Barringtonia acutangula leaves’ extract for the treatment of diabetic white mouse. In this study, white mouse are divided into five groups, namely Bt/PBS, ÑTÑ/Lv.250, ÑTÑ/Lv.500, ÑTÑ/ Dia.80, and ÑTÑ/PBS. The study’s results show that the blood sugar level of the ÑTÑ/Lv.500 mouse group drops to 183mg/dL. The biochemical indicators including Ure, Creatinine, Cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C of the mouse group which is treated by the use of Barringtonia acutangula leaves’ extract are improved. In addition, the kidney and liver functions of this group’s mouse are also healed.
