Enhancing university students’ generative artificial intelligence competence: Current situation and solutions

Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), particularly large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, is increasingly used in higher education to support students’ learning and research. However, its use entails risks, especially when students lack the ability to evaluate and verify AI-generated information. This study examines the challenges associated with GenAI and the current state of its use among university students, highlighting limitations in their ability to utilize these tools effectively. It then proposes a GenAI usage procedure designed to mitigate risks and recommends measures to strengthen students’ competence in using GenAI for learning and research, thereby promoting more effective use of this technology in higher education.
