Design of spinal braces using 3D technology and proteor software

Abstract

This study proposes a digital workflow for designing spinal braces to improve treatment quality and patient adherence. The method integrates three-dimensional surface-scanning data of the thoracolumbar region with the biomechanical principles of the Rigo classification system. Using the specialized Proteor Shape software, the workflow standardizes the identification of corrective areas, applied forces, expansion zones, and brace geometry. The results show that the proposed procedure reduces the design time to less than 90 minutes per product. It also enables clinicians to inspect and modify the model directly in a three-dimensional environment, thereby strengthening quality control and substantially reducing post-printing defects. The optimized workflow produces three-dimensionally printed spinal braces that meet medical requirements while improving aesthetics and patient comfort. It may also support longer brace-wearing duration and contribute to more effective treatment and recovery.
