Extraction of essential oil from the peels of lemon (Citrus Aurantfolia L.)

Abstract
This study is to extract essential oil from the peels of lemon grown in Chau Thanh district, An Giang province by using the steam distillation, and explores the factors affecting this extraction including the ratio of water to lemon peels and the distillation time. Water and impurities in the obtained essential oil are removed, and then the antibacterial activity of the essential oil is analyzed. The study’s results show that the highest extraction yield is 1.65 percent when the distillation time is of 70 minutes and the ratio of water to the lemon peels is 5:1(w/v). And the obtained essential oil has activity against Escherichia coli.
